Ossuary of Elbigenalp

Research Platform: Ossarium – Ossuaries and European Burial Culture

The public display of human bones and the visual staging of death are often viewed as repulsive  and quickly categorized as macabre. Taking a closer look at it, however, reveals the intriguing diversity in representations of death.

Since 2013, Yves Müller and Anna-Katharina Höpflinger have approached the subject from a cultural studies perspective. Please feel free to browse through photographs, publications and events related to ossuaries, death and the burial culture in Europe on the Ossarium homepage.
